At the ICCA Congress 2024, we partner with hotels that highlight their sustainability efforts with certifications from either Green Key or Hotel Sustainability Basics, two standards that underscore our commitment to sustainability. Among the 16 hotels, 80% (13 hotels) hold the Hotel Sustainability Basics certification, and 20% (3 hotels) are certified with the Green Key.
Hotel Sustainability Basics, created by the World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC), serves as a strategic starting point for hotels embarking on their sustainability journey. This certification consists of 12 essential criteria focused on Efficiency, Planet, and People, such as reducing energy and water usage, minimising waste, and eliminating single-use plastics. It allows hotels to meet 8 criteria initially and progressively work toward the rest within a three-year period, promoting gradual and meaningful change in their operations.
Green Key represents a higher level of responsibility and commitment, signifying that tourism establishments meet the rigorous criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). As a globally recognised leader in sustainable tourism, this certification reflects a hotel's dedication to maintaining high environmental standards, verified through regular audits and comprehensive documentation. Green Key hotels actively work to reduce their carbon footprint by implementing innovative solutions that minimise energy and water consumption while reducing waste.
While Hotel Sustainability Basics is an important first step, Green Key-certified hotels are already making significant strides in sustainable practices. Both certifications are vital to our shared goal of promoting sustainability in the tourism industry, and we are committed to supporting our partner hotels as they continue on this journey.
